2016-2017 Season Auditions

Auditions will be held this Sunday, June 5 at Marvin Ridge High School. Each student will receive an arrival time for their audition from USYO Manager Carol Wiley. Please submit your application online and also view the audition requirements. If students have not yet paid audition fees they will be able to pay a $15 audition fee at the door on Sunday. Our third annual Pops on the Plaza kicked off with “The Star Spangled Banner” and concluded with the energetic “Danzas Cubanas”. The crowd of over 700 people was especially livened up by Union Symphony Youth Orchestra’s vivacious rendition of the Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana hit song “Smooth”. Prelude Junior Strings (Director Amanda Turner) and Union Jazz (Director Dennis Contreras) performed prior to the concert. Thank you, students and staff, for your phenomenal performances and thank you to all who came to the pops to support USYO.

Directed by Mercedes Diaz-Garcia, the Union Symphony Orchestra and Union Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform Bernstein’s West Side Story and other fun favorites on the Plaza in Downtown Monroe this Sunday, May 15, at 7 PM with an overture performance at 6 PM. Lawn seating, picnics & blankets welcome.

Allegro Strings

Allegro Strings performed for the Spring Showcase on Tuesday, May 10 at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe. Students performed works by Richard Rogers, John Williams and others. This was the final performance of students of Allegro Strings and Dorian Fiddles, both of which are directed by Beth Joy Fowler.

Union Symphony League Chair Donna Norwood and Secretary Lois Crumpler helped with the presentation of certificates to the students following the performance. 26 students were recognized for the completion of the 2015–2016 Concert Season.
Thanks to the students, supportive families, Director Beth Joy Fowler, and Accompanist Gwen Starnes. Thank you, First Presbyterian Church, for hosting this event. Much appreciation goes out to Community Partner in Education Piedmont Natural Gas, as well as Union County Public Schools, Union County Community Arts Council, and season sponsors BetterCarPeople and Big Ring.

Vivace Strings Performs

Union Symphony Orchestra’s concert last Sunday, “Invitation to the New World”, celebrated their tenth anniversary. Vivace Strings performed in the rotunda for guests as they entered the performance hall at the Batte Center.  This was Vivace Strings’ final performance for the 2015-2016 season.Vivace

Senior Recital

Abril Ruiz-Lopez and Sarah Mills, violin students of Beth Joy Fowler, gave a senior recital last Friday, May 22 at the recital hall at the Batte Center, Wingate University. The girls each performed solo selections as well as with fellow students including the Union Symphony Youth Ensemble Dorian Fiddles. Following the performance a reception was enjoyed by all.
Abril and Sarah are members of the Union Symphony Youth Orchestra. Beth Joy Fowler is the director of Allegro Strings and Dorian Fiddles.
